Creating a sustainable environment and enhancing the natural landscape are two key elements in the development.

One third of the 4oo acre site will be green landscape with parks and places for children to play. Semi-mature, native trees - such as beech, plane, horse chestnut, ash, cherries and white beam - are being planted on all the strects and in the courtyards. Views to Maiden Castle are being enhanced by extensive tree planting.

The Poundbury Building Code encourages the housebuilders to include the latest energy-conserving features such as storage for recycle-able waste, general insulation, double glazing, condensing boilers and water meters.

All services such as telephone, electricity, gas and drainage are housed in a single channel behind housing, partly for case of maintenance and also to prevent inconvenient road disruption. Both terrestrial and satellite televisjon are cabled to every house so there are no unsightly wires at Poundbury.
