PROOFS OF THE PUBLIC'S GOOD TASTE
Leaving aside the poll known as the private housing market (where buyers freely choose the style of house they want), the most compelling proof of the public’s traditional taste was a poll of 1,804 citizens done in 2007 by the American Institute of Architects for its 150th anniversary. The public turned a vigorous thumbs down on modernist buildings. The highest on the list of 150 favorites was Fallingwater, by Frank Lloyd Wright, finished in 1938. It ranked 29th. (The World Trade Center ranked 19th for reasons of sentiment.) Crestfallen modern architects no doubt wished the AIA had kept its trap shut.

FROM CONTRAST TO CONTINUITY: A NEW PRESERVATION PHILOSOPHY
For the last half-century, historic preservation regulation has offered an essential defense of the cultural values embodied in our heritage environments. The need to conserve the most valued models of architecture and urbanism has motivated citizens around the world to defend the character-defining elements of these places from destruction or insensitive modification. While early preservation battles were aimed against willful destruction of historic properties for the sake of economic development or thoughtless "modernization," now the challenge is more likely to be preserving historic character from additions or alterations by noted architects that introduce discordant elements or styles, even at sites under the protection of preservation laws. The guardians of our historic places have too often yielded to the promoters of the "architecture of our time," with dismaying consequences. How did this happen?

PUBLIC PREFERS TRADITIONAL ARCHITECTURE, SUGGESTS POLL
The RIBA-affiliated Traditional Architecture Group has rallied to support Robert Adam after he launched a broadside against the Stirling Prize for favouring modernist buildings.
The arch-classicist published the results of a YouGov poll on the eve of last weekend’s Stirling Prize ceremony, suggesting that 77% of the public prefer traditional buildings to contemporary ones.
The survey, widely seen as an attempt to undermine the Stirling, showed four designs — two classical, two modern — to more than 1,000 members of the public and asked which they would like to be built in their neighbourhood.

OUR RECENT DEBATE WITH ARCHITECT FRANK GEHRY SHOWS THE PUBLIC'S DESIRE FOR DESIGN THAT FORSTERS GREAT PLACES
Based on more than 30 years of work at Project for Public Spaces, I am convinced that place-based initiatives are the best way to promote vitality and prosperity in cities everywhere. But the recent trend toward “iconic” architecture and design—which has gained a big following in the media and among high-profile clients, winning numerous prizes—minimizes the importance of citizen input and dismisses the goals of creating great public places. Instead it promotes a design-centric philosophy where all that matters is the artistic statement conceived by an internationally recognized celebrity. By Fred Kent.

YEMEN FINDS DREAMLAND OF ARCHITECTURE
Architects rediscovering the Old City of Sana soon found there was more than beauty at stake. The traditional houses were also more durable and effective than concrete-based modern houses, and better suited to the climate.
“The traditional houses have many environmental advantages,” said Abdulla Zaid Ayssa, the director of the government office that oversees all building and renovation in the Old City.
