PRINCE CHARLES RESIGNS AS PATRON FOR THE PROTECTION OF ANCIENT BUILDINGS
Prince Charles quit as patron of the Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings, which William Morris founded in 1877, after it rejected a foreword he had written for a handbook on the restoration of old houses.
The Prince forcefully took the view in the piece that old houses should always be restored in their original style, while the society, despite its title, is committed to employing the best of modern architecture and design in restoration projects.

The Lakanal House deaths cast shame on Britain. We urgently need to audit all similar blocks. Lakanal House and Sceaux Gardens estate are indeed no different from the all but countless estates of this type rushed up from the mid-1950s to the early 1970s. Most are, at best, tolerated by residents and only really loved by architectural historians.

OPPSUMMERING AV STRIDEN MELLOM PRINCE CHARLES OG ARKITEKT ROGERS OM ET BYUTVIKLINGSPROSJEKT I CHELSEA, LONDON
As Charles was communicating with the Qataris, architect Terry doodled a rough sketch of a neo-Georgian design for the site. This image was leaked to the press, which printed it again and again alongside the Rogers version. The public response to this comparison did greater harm to Rogers's proposal, in my opinion, than Charles's "between us royals" letter to the Qataris, who had paid £1 billion for the site.
Until this point, the public was given little say in what sort of hash the big developers were planning to make of their neighborhood.

THE PARADIGM OF URBAN AND TRAFFIC PLANNING. A STUDY OF SCAFT 1968, PRECEDENTS AND FOLLOWERS
It is found in this doctoral thesis from Chalmers University of Technology in Sweden that the scientific evidence supporting the SCAFT planning principles are weak. Instead it is found that the 'modern city' concept of Le Corbusier, with roots in Garnier and Haussman among others, forms a strong source of inspiration not earlier questioned by the new problems politicians and planners have to deal with. The Swedish guideline SCAFT generates more traffic than classical town planning and is an obstruction for good town planning.

EU REPENTS ITS URBAN DESTRUCTION IN BRUSSELS
The European Union has rarely been a welcome neighbor since it arrived here four decades ago. Its headquarters, 10 minutes west of downtown, is officially known as the Berlaymont building. But for many natives who do not much care for its fortresslike looks, it is the Berlaymonster, a cross-shaped hulk covered with glass panels to let in the little sunlight that brightens the city’s gloomy skies.
Worse yet, the Berlaymonster has spawned a family of like-minded buildings in the city’s old Leopold Quarter. These glass and steel offices and apartments — for bureaucrats, diplomats, lawyers, lobbyists and other European hangers-on — have gobbled up swaths of pleasant old residential areas once teeming with neighborhood stores, churches, schools and parks.
But now the European Union has proposed a new development scheme, which it says will purge some of the urban sins it has committed over the years.
