NEUES MUSEUM IN BERLIN

PARIS SHOULD BEWARE THESE GRAND ARCITECTURAL DESIGN
Architecture critic Jonathan Glancey in The Guardian, London:
"No single architect can ever right the city's wrongs, or come up with ideal, universal solutions. Plans on anything like a big scale will need the involvement of many different people and sectors of Parisian society if they are to have a chance of working. They need to be matched by hundreds of small plans that will allow the streets of Paris from the Marais to Marne-la-Vallée to flourish in a way that is all their own"

IS RIBA RIGHT TO INVITE PRINCE CHARLES TO SPEAK?
Yes, the prince has been good for architecture, says Robert Adam; no, counters Jack Pringle, he has abused his regal celebrity to promote his uninformed views

ROYAL FAVOURITE TO CREATE NEW MEMORIAL IN LONDON
A Designer favoured by Prince Charles will create the long-awaited Bomber Command Memorial in central London.
Liam O'Connor, who designed the Commonwealth Memorial Gates at Hyde Park Corner, beat competition from Lord Foster, among others, to win the commission.

ABSENT ZAHA HADID CRITICISED AT BARBICAN DEBATE
Cameron Sinclair, co-founder of Architects for Humanity and archetypal rabble-rouser, led the charge. “When I heard… [Hadid] would be a part of the debate, I was quite shocked about that. It’s like asking Robert Mugabe if he’d like to speak about human rights.”

A PRINCE WHO JUST HAPPENS TO BE RIGHT
The Prince of Wales is no stranger to controversy when it comes to architecture and he has fought some bloody battles over the years.
Thus his intervention in the scheme at Chelsea Barracks is significant. He regards the Lord Rogers design as inappropriate (no doubt a euphemism for “hideous”) for a site alongside Sir Christopher Wren’s Royal hospital.
His involvement has infuriated the architectural establishment, as can be seen on our letters page today.

IS ROGER'S PLAN FOR CHELSEA BARRACKS GOOD URBANISM?
Yes, says MJ Long, it’s an integrated scheme that has rhythm and style; no, says Alan Baxter, its public realm content is insufficient and it destroys the existing street pattern

QUINLAN TERRY DESIGN TOPS CHELSEA BARRACKS POLL
Prince Charles' preferred architect leads Richard Rogers' modern design with 60% of votes.
The Building magazine internet poll, which pits Richard Rogers' original design for the development against one by Quinlan Terry, follows Prince Charles' recent comment that the more traditional architect would be a better choice for the scheme.

THE GREEN HOUSE OF THE FUTURE
We asked architects to draw up plans for the most energy-efficient houses they could imagine. They imagined quite a bit.
Learning from the past. Looking to the future isn't the only way to be innovative. The house from architect Steve Mouzon, of Mouzon Design in Miami Beach, Fla., uses tomorrow's technologies while mining ancient techniques to reduce energy use.

PARIS CITIZENS WANT TOWERS TO BE DEMOLISHED
Prominent French newspaper LE FIGARO has published the results of a poll among Paris inhabitants. Citizens hate Modernist buildings. They consider them as "funerary monuments" and want them to be demolished.
Especially towers.

DOES LONDON NEED A NEW VERNACULAR FOR HOUSING?
Yes, it would offer coherence to our developing neighbourhoods, says Alex Ely; while Joe Morris argues that it means an indigenous but anonymous architecture

CHARLES SHOULD STCK TO HIS GUNS
The carbuncle crew are still hard at work. The glass boxes, blobs and phalluses thrown up now by architects show little has changed since the prince's 1984 speech
So is it over? The culture war between the Prince of Wales and the doyens of modern architecture has been running for a quarter century. It was supposedly ended on Tuesday night at the Royal Institute of British Architects in London where the massed ranks of the profession sat in dark suits and politely applauded.
The prince's 1984 "carbuncle" speech depicted architects as self-obsessed popinjays strutting the streets of Britain, smashing and sneering at anything traditional and erecting cheapjack glass and steel memorials to their egos.
