CHINESE CITY TO TRIM TALL BUILDINGS
Many Chinese cities have raced to the top, vying with each other to build the tallest and shiniest skyscrapers. Hangzhou is going in a radically different direction - down. It plans to lop floors off exclusive hotels, a television tower and other lakeside buildings in an attempt to win coveted Unesco world heritage status.

FREDER TREHUSBYEN LEVANGER
Rundt 190 eiendommer fredes midlertidig fordi Riksantikvaren mener reguleringsplanen i området ikke kan brukes til å stanse riving av den særpregede trehusbebyggelsen i byen.

THE IDIOT'S GUIDE TO ARCHITECTURE
Although designing ‘pastiche’ buildings is not yet a criminal offence, the received view is that they certainly shouldn’t be built. This is not just untrue, it’s dumb

THE NEW URBANISTS TACKLING EUROPE'S SPRAWL
In the last few decades, urban sprawl, once regarded as largely a U.S. phenomenon, has spread across Europe. Now an emerging group of planners is promoting a new kind of development — mixed-use, low-carbon communities that are pedestrian-friendly and mass-transit-oriented.
The mood among the planners, architects, and theorists gathered at the International Conference on Climate Change and Urban Design in Oslo last September was, despite the heavy gray autumn skies, quite buoyant, inspired by a feeling that their time had come.

BERLINS HISTORISCHE MITTE BEKOMMT STRENGE BAUREGELN

GLOBALIZATION FROM THE BOTTOM UP - SUSTAINABLE URBAN SETTLEMENTS
A speech by HRH The Prince of Wales at The Prince's Foundation for the Built Environment conference 2009
He talks about Enquiry by Design as a tool for sustainable urban development.
"Now as some of you may know, my Foundation has pioneered the use of the Enquiry by Design process, which seeks to place people at the heart of any design or plan, rather than merely the car. At the very outset, it brings together a cross-section of the community in order to draw up long term plans based firmly on consensus and sound local knowledge. This is in contrast to the conventional planning route which, I believe, tends to pitch competing interests and narrow specialisms against each other, all too frequently resulting in incoherent, piecemeal growth. I do believe that early engagement with the community and other stakeholders leads to greater certainty in the planning process which, in turn, both accelerates individual projects and ensures more sympathetic and organic developments."

MARKING THE END OF "THE BILBAO DECADE"
Times dictate a shift away from vanity projects.
Suddenly architecture was in. Every city, it seemed, wanted to be like Bilbao, wanted its own daring, avant-garde iconic building. Usually that building was an art museum or a skyscraper.
All that fever now feels passe. Architecture students, I'm told, are more interested in so-called "green architecture," work that responds to the global crisis of climate and resources, than they are in artistic shape-making. They're interested in urbanism, in the ways buildings gather to shape streets and neighborhoods and public spaces.

OBAMA PUTS SPOTLIGHT ON NATION'S INFRASTRUCTURE
The age of the architectural icon—that extravagant, exuberant, "wow"-inducing building on a pedestal—is dead, or more precisely, in its death throes. And what will replace it? President Barack Obama, who once dreamed of being an architect, had something to say about that Tuesday in his inaugural address: the age of infrastructure.
