CITIES FOR LIVING
Léon Krier designs urban environments to human scale. I have seen Krier lecture to a roomful of skeptical left-wingers who had agreed only reluctantly to listen to this quaint apologist for a vanished age. And with the unassuming, self-questioning manner of a true teacher, he convinced his audience that the ideas that he laid before them were not his but theirs. They left the room in a condition of cheerful self-discovery, understanding that their socialist utopias were "news from nowhere," and committed to somewhere instead. Such is Krier's effect, I have discovered, on everyone he meets.
Article by Roger Scruton, a writer and philosopher, is currently a professor at the Institute for the Psychological Sciences in Arlington, Virginia.

LOVER "SMÅSKALA"-UTBYGGING I RISØR
Adm.dir.

VINOLY'S BATTERSEA DESIGN IS A MENACE TO LONDON
Former RIBA president George Ferguson has attacked Vinoly's new design for Battersea Power Station, branding Vinoly a "major menace to London". While he can be touched by brilliance at the smaller scale he seems to lose it on the London skyline. The shell of Battersea Power Station is one of London's most powerful icons.

BYGGER MORGENDAGENS SLUM

THE ARCHITECTS STYLE WARS
Robert Adam, and Quinlan Terry start a style battle by lashing out at Modernism. Robert Adam hit the headlines last month when he joined another Classical architect, Quinlan Terry, designer of the new infirmary at the Royal Hospital in Chelsea, in a robust attack on Modernism. The pair condemned what they viewed as the bias of the Royal Institute of British Architecture (RIBA) against traditional buildings in its annual awards.

IS AMERICA'S SUBURBAN DREAM COLLAPSING IN A NIGHTMARE?
Christopher Leinberger, an urban planning professor at the University of Michigan and visiting fellow at the Brookings Institution: "The American dream is absolutely changing," he told CNN.
This change can be witnessed in places like Atlanta, Georgia, Detroit, Michigan, and Dallas, where once rundown downtowns are being revitalized by well-educated, young professionals who have no desire to live in a detached single family home typical of a suburbia.
Instead, they are looking for what Leinberger calls "walkable urbanism" -- both small communities and big cities characterized by efficient mass transit systems and high density developments enabling residents to walk virtually everywhere for everything -- from home to work to restaurants to movie theaters.
The so-called New Urbanism movement emerged in the mid-90s and has been steadily gaining momentum, especially with rising energy costs, environmental concerns and health problems associated with what Leinberger calls "drivable suburbanism" -- a low-density built environment plan that emerged around the end of the World War II and has been the dominant design in the U.S. ever since.
But now, Leinberger told CNN, it appears the pendulum is beginning to swing back in favor of the type of walkable community that existed long before the advent of the once fashionable suburbs in the 1940s. He says it is being driven by generations molded by television shows like "Seinfeld" and "Friends," where city life is shown as being cool again -- a thing to flock to, rather than flee."

PARIS
The battle over building heights in Paris pits a popular socialist mayor Bertrand Delanoë against real estate developers who would love to see the City of Light enter the twenty-first century. Under his administration, public-housing developments are built to look and feel as citified as chic downtown dwellings. A new circular tramway line runs through them in the middle of tree-lined esplanades that are as appealing and lively as the boulevards in the center of the capital.
