With a broader range of statistics than previous studies and conclusions of international relevance, Urban Structure Matters provides well-grounded conclusions for how spatial planning of urban areas can be used to reduce car dependence and achieve a more sustainable development of cities.

PLANNED TOWER SPLITS ST. PETERSBURG
The 1,300-foot skyscraper to be built on the Neva River across from the pastel-blue-and-white Smolny Cathedral will loom over a baroque cityscape famous for the Hermitage art museum and the Peter and Paul Cathedral, among dozens of other historic landmarks.
The project has become a flash point in an angry debate not just about architectural preservation and corporate clout, modernity and the old city, but also power and privilege in today's Russia.
ICOMOS international has also sent a formal protest to Gazproms project.

THE PRINCE OF WALES CALLS FOR NEW HOMES TO BE ECO-FRIENDLY
Eleven developments have been recognised by the Home Builders Federation and The Prince's Foundation for the Built Environment for adopting the Foundation's design principles, helping to improve quality of life for residents and for being energy-efficient.
The other categories on which the developments were judged included more local amenities, alternatives to car dependency, timeless designs and neighbourhoods with context and character.

LET'S KILL OFF THE CUL-DE SAC
Britain's cul-de-sacs, long the butt of metropolitan snobbery, are now being targeted by the Prince of Wales as an environmental menace that foster crime, car dependence and obesity. Prince Charles has persuaded Britain's biggest housebuilders, including Barratt, George Wimpey and Bovis Homes, to halt the postwar spread of suburban closes, a boom reflected by the Channel 4 soap Brookside.
Under new guidelines, they will bring back higher density housing in Victorian-style grids, to encourage people to exercise by placing shops and amenities within walking distance. Research from Dr Richard Jackson, the American public health expert, shows that people in car-based communities weigh on average 6 pounds more than those in traditional towns.

URBAN LAND INSTITUTE - EUROPEAN STUDENT URBAN DESIGN COMPETETION
Each year a large-scale site will be chosen in an urban regeneration area located in Europe. Student teams are invited to be formed at all European universities. We urge students to participate with projects and plans based on New Urbanism. We predict there is a good chance get much attention because many other competitors will come up with car-based and out-of-scale schemes as they have been taught in their architect schools.

- Council for European Urbanism, et tverrfaglig europeisk nettverk for byutvikling.
