NEW URBANISM IN NORDRHEIN-WESTPHALEN

NEW URBANISTS CALLED IN BY GOVERNOR FOR REBUILDING MISSISSIPPI Mississippi Governor Haley Barbour said, "My hat is off... This charrette process, this Forum, has been everything I hoped it would be and far, far more.

Article in Chicago Tribune:
"In the wake of Katrina, the nitty-gritty matters of housing and community-building have replaced glamorous museums and other "spectacle" buildings as the most pressing design problems of our time. The New Urbanists have been wrestling with these issues for more than two decades".
"The simultaneous creation of plans for 11 towns along 80 miles of coastline in six days. The architects, who drank a lot of coffee and Red Bull, did more than produce a blueprint. They empowered people here with alternatives to placeless suburban sprawl."

PARIS IS NOT WHAT IT WAS
"A city's opportunity structure can vary very much with different types of urban forms. For example have immigrant researchers noted that there is a tremendous difference between pre war and post war neighbourhoods in Europe, when it comes to the possibilities to establish immigrant business. Immigrants have for acceptable reasons (language, education and so on) and unacceptable reasons (racism) difficulties to find jobs in many cases. To start small business is a typical solution for many of them and because of lack of capital they often find there way in retail/restaurant/café business - entry business you could say. Jane Jacobs (author of "The life and death of the great american cities") has explained very clearly how dependent secondary functions (business that exist only because of its access to a complex street life) are of proximity to street life generated by primary functions. Many areas of large housing estates lack fine-grained mix-use and they usually don't have enough premises, and very often they have regulations that forbids establishment of business.
Of course no one believes it's all about the built environment. That is to reduce our abilities to think. We are of course discussing built aspects of the problem. (quotations from Peter Elmlund, Urban City Research in Stockholm).

Now we are seeing the effects of "modern" mono(dys)functional planning and building. Or with Churchills words, "we shape our buildings and thereafter they shape us".
