ANDRES DUANY ON THE AVANT-GARDE
Noen ord for det nye år fra Andres Duany, den ledende arkitekten i New Urbanism-bevegelsen i USA. Hans utsagn handler om en arkitektur og byplanlegning som er bærekraftig kulturelt og teknisk.
"The problem inherent in the contemporary architectural situation is not that it is modern, but that it is avant garde. The relentless pursuit of the unprecedented undermines two essential roles of architecture: the collective endeavor that is required for an urbanism; and the establishment of a transmissible body of knowledge. The latter prevents the teaching of architecture, thereby lowering the quality of the production.
I was just reading Susan Sontag's obituary in the Times. She became famous in the 6O's by arguing that the defining characteristic of the current avant garde is a 'sensibility centered on artifice, exaggeration and the veneration of style.'
It became clear to me that the new discourse cannot be primarily about style. That would be complicit in the avant-garde sensibility, and it would be to engage in our opponent's discourse. Ours must be a deeply serious pursuit of an ethical architecture engaged in the important issues that confront our society. We should be based on the traditions that have shared these concerns¬excluding neither the classical nor the modern where they can contribute."

KOMMUNEDELPLAN BEVARING OG BYTUTVIKLING I OSLO
Vi har fått følgende svar på vårt brev angående kommunedelplanen fra Stig Eide i Plan- og bygningsetaten:
"Planen vil i nær fremtid oversendes til byrådsavdelingen for byutvikling for utleggelse til offentlig ettersyn. Da det dreier seg om en kommunedelplan, er det byråden for byutvikling som vil være ansvarlig for høringen. Planforslaget er derfor ikke offentlig tilgjengelig før byråden har vurdert forslaget i sin helhet og bestemt utleggelse til offentlig ettersyn.
Planforslaget vil ved utleggelse til offentlig ettersyn også bli gjort tilgjengelig på Oslo kommunes nettsider.
Det er sannsynlig at det vil bli flere arrangementer i form av seminarer/diskusjonspaneler i forbindelse med
høringsperioden og/eller som del av oppfølging i etterkant, men det er pr. i dag ikke konkret fastsatt noen slike."
Vi vil komme tilbake med mer informasjon etterhvert som vi vet mer. Vi oppfordrer våre lesere å følge utviklingen av planen som vil ha stor innvirkning på hvordan ny bebyggelse tilpasses eksisterende bebyggelse.
MAJORSTU-CHARRETTEN - ANMODNING OM AT BYRÅDET GRIPER INN OVERFOR PLAN- OG BYGNINGSETATEN FOR Å SIKRE TILPASNING AV PROSJEKTET I SØRKEDALSVEIEN 7 - 13. VURDERING AV BYGGE- OG DELEFORBUD
Prosjektleder Audun Engh har sendt en anmodning av 03.01.05 til byråd for byutvikling Grete Horntvedt.
Engh oppsummerer anmodningen i sitt brev til byråden slik:
"Audun Engh og Arne Sødal, som var engasjert av PBE som konsulenter under Majorstuen-charretten, anmoder om at byråden så snart som mulig griper inn for å stanse den umiddelbart forestående innvilgelse av rammetillatelse for det store utbyggingsprosjektet i Sørkedalsveien 7-13. Under charretten for Majorstuen ble det fra PBE ved etatsdirektøren lovet at etaten skulle ta opp bearbeidelse av prosjektet innen vedtatt regulering for å sikre muligheter til å realisere forslagene fra charretten. Dette ble ikke gjort og bør gjøres nå, før det er sent."
THE PHILIPPE ROTTHIER EUROPEAN PRIZE FOR ARCHITECTURE FOR TOWN AND CITY RECONSTRUCTION
Set up in 1982 by the architect Philippe Rotthier, this triennial architectural prize is one of the rare prizes that rewards projects that consciously identify with the traditional concept of the town or city as seen through European eyes. The prize has a twofold objective: on the one hand, to draw attention to contemporary urban architectural work which is often ignored by critics and the specialised press and, on the other hand, to raise the expectations of the public, elected representatives and sponsors.
Entries must be submitted no later than the 15th of April 2005.

SAKSISK SLOTT VEDTATT REKONSTRUERT I WARSZAWA
Für den Wiederaufbau des Sächsischen Palais' auf dem Pilsudski-Platz in Warschau hat das Innenministerium am 21. Dezember 2004 grünes Licht gegeben. Mit der Rekonstruktion des Barockschlosses von August dem Starken soll eine der letzten innerstädtischen Kriegslücken Warschaus geschlossen werden.
Vi ønsker polakkene til lykke med arbeidet som viser hvilken pris man der setter på tradisjonell arkitektur og dens forbindelser med vår europeiske kultur.

Now, after months of deliberation, the mayor of Paris has chosen a French architect, David Mangin, to oversee a fresh attempt to rescue the 15-acre zone.
6. januar: A Rich Menu to Choose From for the 'Belly of Paris' - To Parisians, the demolition of the pavilions in the early 1970's was an architectural atrocity, comparable to the mid-1960's demolition of McKim, Mead & White's Beaux Arts-style Pennsylvania Station (in New York). The creation of the Forum des Halles on the same spot - a soulless warren of underground shops that has been a favorite haunt of drug dealers - exemplifies the worst of late-20th-century Modernity, with its tabula rasa approach to history and its penchant for sterile inhuman spaces.

Town-planning policy for Europe calling for "innovation and modernity".
EU will establish soon a new Modernist standard to promote huge corporations and soften the differencies among states. See the Turkish issue.
CEU should propose an alternative very soon based upon diversity, democracy, and regionalism.
